Bergara Offers Two New Lines of Affordable Rifles This Year
Bergara started as a barrel company, and the company makes barrels for a number of highly-respected gun manufacturers. From that business, BPI has developed a custom rifle business. The BPI folks thought that since our company made the barrels being used on a number of very high-quality rifles, we might consider marketing some of those barrels ourselves through the Bergara line. We paired our barrels with top quality component parts available in today’s rifle market. We hired a man from the United States Marine Corps, who was in charge of building sniper rifles for the USMC and started building custom guns for us. For the past 3 years, we’ve been selling these custom-built Bergara rifles that have built a solid reputation among expert shooters.
This year we’re expanding that brand into production rifles to bring these rifles down to a price point that the average hunter and shooter can afford. A custom rifle is made specifically from the request of a particular consumer. The custom-rifle customer can choose every component he wants built into his rifle – the stock, the diameter and the length of the barrel, the type of action he wants and the kind of trigger he prefers. A production rifle can be of the same quality as the custom rifle, but it’s made to set dimensions with the same parts. Because the stocks are made to fit that action and that barrel, stocks can be made in advance of the rifle being built, and BPI can offer stocks of higher quality. So, what we’ve been able to do is to build a custom quality rifle that can be sold off the gun rack at any sporting-goods store. Our custom rifles sell for between $3,000 and $5,000. The new Bergara Premier Line, which is a custom quality production gun, probably will sell for $1,500—$2,000.
Bergara’s also developing another line that we call our Performance Line that will cost less than $1,000 each. An example of the Performance Line will be a new bolt action gun that we’re introducing that will sell for about $800, a price that’s in the range of what discriminating hunters will pay for a high-quality rifle. Our first offerings will be .30-06, .300 Win Mag, .270, .308 and .65 Creedmoor.
