Bergara Broken Bolt Shrouds
We would like to take a quick opportunity to respond to a couple of posts about broken bolt shrouds on B14 rifles. Over the past few months Bergara has received a few isolated reports of broken bolt shrouds, limited exclusively to rifles chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor. In investigating these reports, we discovered that in almost every instance the cartridge used was acknowledged to be hand-loaded. In addition, in many the shooter admitted to using CCI #400 small rifle primers – primers not designed for the pressures related to this cartridge.
We proof 100% of our rifles using Proof Loads which are approximately 30% “hotter” than SAAMI approved factory loads. In addition, we at Bergara hunt with and shoot extensively all of our models, in all calibers. In the history of our shooting and proofing B14 rifles (literally multiple tens of thousands of rounds), and particularly the 6.5 Creedmoor, we have never had a broken or cracked shroud, bolt failure, a ruptured cartridge or anything else that demonstrates a remote sign of stress on the action or bolt.
We understand that some Bergara owners are going to hand-load despite the cautions from the firearms manufacturing community. As many of you are aware, there are many complexities and potentially hidden dangers of the practice if not done correctly with any firearm cartridge – but especially so on ones like the 6.5 Creedmoor where factory loads already push 62 to 63,000 PSI. In short, there is no margin for error.
We are a truly a company of “users” and want our products to perform reliably under rigorous “real world” usage that we all expect from Bergara. We continually do extensive testing of all of our product designs so that we can continue to make Bergara the most reliable rifles on the market. If you experience any problem with your Bergara, regardless of cause, we want to hear from you.
Despite the fact the customers reporting shroud issues acknowledged hand-loading, and the fact that practice technically would void the warranty, we have replaced their shroud with a new machined shroud, at no cost to the owner. And, if anyone that owns a B14 in 6.5 would like to receive a new machined shroud, just drop us an email to email@example.com and we will put one in the mail to you.
We stand firm that if our product is used in a manner that it is intended for, then it should withstand the reasonable rigors you throw at it. And if it does not? We will be standing by right here to make it right!
